Is it OK to Wear Blue Eyeshadow?

Remember the old days when beauty editors and experts swore off blue eyeshadow (in fact, we had an article on this site that called jewel-toned blue eyeshadow a ‘no-no’)? Not anymore.

Deep jewel colors continue to be trendy and blue is the hottest shade of them all. It also looks gorgeous with all eye colors.

Even better news! According to the Ladies Home Journal March, 2006, issue, makeup companies have come up with a new way to compress more pigment than ever into their eye shadows. Now you can pick a shade that looks the same on your eyelids as it does through the plastic cover on the container. In the past, shadows went on lighter or in some cases, muddier. Not anymore. Now you can buy without fear of hating the color.

Just remember when applying deeply-hued shadows to blend well and keep the rest of your makeup light.

How to Wear Vibrant Eyeshadows

Yes, those jewel-toned eyeshadows are in, but how to wear them? Here are some basic tips to consider:

Blending is key The richest colors should stay closest to the lashline, fading as it reaches your eye’s crease, according to Barneys New York makeup artist Carlos Geraci in the April 2006 ‘O’ magazine.

Pick colors that flatter your eyes & skin color Blue shadows make blue eyes pop, while lilac & purples are gorgeous on brown eyes & black-skinned & olive-skinned women. If you have pink skin (as opposed to a yellow base), avoid pinky-purples.

Use 2 shadows, a light & a dark Pick a soft color for the entire eye area up to the browbone & then use the darker color only up to your eye’s crease.

Keep the rest of your makeup light Nude lips with gloss suits these strong eyes perfectly. Avoid colors on lips, they’ll not only compete with your strong eyes, but the colors could clash.

Choosing Eyeliner

Many brands offer a variety of hues, textures and types of eyeliners; ideally suited for different situations, weather conditions, shape and color of the eyes. Eyes are quite delicate and need to be handled with care. Soft eyeliner pencils, liquid eyeliner, felt tip eyeliner that works like the liquid one and the cake eyeliners are the most common types available in the market. Pencils and felt tips must glide easily on the eyelid area and must not require pressure. Using eyeliner properly needs a lot of practice and a steady hand to avoid smudging it. Pencil and felt tip eyeliners are easier to control as you can use them like pens to sketch the desired look and define your eyes while liquid eyeliners need more practice just like using pointed brushes in painting and may smudge easily but they make better, brighter and clearer lines.

Cake eyeliners were previously considered an asset for professional makeup artists but women have picked up the trend and are now using them increasingly. Eyeshadows can also be used effectively as eyeliners and in fact offer many more colors and shades to experiment with. Eye pencil is perhaps the easiest to apply and to make the application easier, it wise to open one’s mouth slightly so that muscles of eyes get telexed and one does not have to pull the lid for lining it. It is also advisable to line the lid as close to the lashes as possible to avoid a white line in between. The earliest archaeological evidence of using an eyeliner as a cosmetic, can be traced back to Egyptian and southern Iraqi women. They used to paint kohl, a thick black ointment, around their eyes to make them look larger. It was also believed to have powers to ward off evil eye.

Sometimes, eyeliner looks too sharp or harsh for our taste, especially when we are try to achieve smoky eye effect. In such a case, you can soften it by dusting a powder shadow of similar shade on your eyeliner using the eye shadow brush. Eyeliner plays a great role in creating optical illusions to give a new shape and size to your eyes. Gray, black and brown liners can be used to line outer third of upper lids of the close set eyes and then smudged gently. Liner of a lighter shade should be used at the inner side of the eye to add the look of the width between eyes. Small eyes can be opened up by lining them with a dark shade that thickens at the outer edge of the eye. Under lower lash, line with a very light shade such as gold, silver and white. Deep-set eyes can be controlled by lining the upper lash line with pale shade that shimmers while the outer edge of the lower lash should be lined with soft and neutral colors such as gray or taupe.

To add brightness to the drooping and tired eyes, line the outer third of eye almost touching the lashes and sweeping the liner slightly up at the corner of the eye. There is a procedure that can define your eyes permanently called micro pigmentation, also known as permanent eyeliner. Here, an organic pigment is embedded beneath the skin using a hand-held device that punctures the skin hundreds of times per minute with a very thin needle and pushes the pigment into the desired location. This procedure is also used to shape your eyebrows, color lips and add blush to your cheeks permanently. It can also be used to wear a permanent eye shadow. However, as this procedure is more painful and costly, most women prefer to do makeup instead of going for permanent procedures.

Choosing Concealers

Concealer, as the name suggests, is used to conceal or camouflage skin imperfections such as blemishes, under-eye circles, spider veins, dark spots, pimples, scars and birth marks, in order to make the skin look flawless. A concealer is usually denser than foundation and is available in creamy liquid, stick, creams and with matte finish. It can also be used to conceal the ruddy areas and freckles on the face. It is very important to make the right choice of the concealer, because the wrong shade can over-emphasize the spots that are covered up, making them even more prominent. Here in the article, we have given some tips on choosing concealers.

Tips To Hide Skin Blemishes

* When you shop for a concealer, it is better to choose one that comes in the natural shade of your skin tone or one or two shades lighter than your foundation. That way, you will be assured that the concealer and foundation will blend to hide your skin flaws and give you the desired look.
* If your skin is very dry, then opt for a liquid concealer, to hide the imperfections on the skin.
* Liquid concealer is the best makeup to hide dark circles under the eyes. You can opt for white solid concealer in order to cover up pimples, scars and bruises on your face.
* Concealer in the consistency of a cream is best suited for all skin types, because it can blend with the skin easily. Be sure to use the pat-and-blend technique of applying the concealer.
* For the perfect flawless look, place a dim-size drop of concealer on your finger tip. Now, pat the concealer onto the area in question.
* If you want to cover up your under-eye circle, apply concealer both outside and under the eyes, so that the color blends into your skin.
* In case you are using a liquid or solid foundation, apply the foundation first, and then the concealer. On the other hand, if you are using a cream or powder foundation, make use of the concealer first, followed by the foundation.
* Imperfections in delicate areas such as under-eye can be best covered by a creamy concealer. You may use dry concealer for other areas, such as cheeks or forehead.
* Do not use concealers with white, pink or green base, because the shade often doesn’t match the skin tone, which would make the flaws look prominent rather than covered.
* While using a concealer, be sure to blend it well to your skin, so that there is no discernible edge between the area (where you have applied the concealer) and the rest of the face, where you haven’t applied it.

How Should I Choose the Best Foundation Makeup?

Foundation makeup, base, liquid makeup, pancake — whatever a woman calls it, the flesh-toned cosmetic that goes on first can make or break a woman’s “look.” With so many colors, kinds and formulas available, choosing the right foundation makeup can seem like an impossible decision.

A woman should first remember that foundation makeup is just that — the layer upon which all her other makeup will rest. How good her foundation makeup looks will determine how the rest of her cosmetics look, so she should keep in mind that foundation makeup is not meant to change the skin’s color. It is meant to match the color as closely as possible. A woman with sallow skin should not attempt to “pink” her skin tone with a rosy foundation makeup, and a pale-complexioned woman should not attempt to “tan” hers with a bronze tone.

Bronzers are available to give skin a sun-kissed look, but these are usually in some kind of powder form and are meant to be used after makeup is applied. In any case, the woman should seek to match her skin’s tone as closely as possible. If her foundation matches her skin, then her blush and powder will match, as well.

Foundation makeup is available in many forms: liquid, crème, stick, crème-to-powder, and so on. Liquid foundation makeup is the most commonly available and can be bought in department stores or in drugstores. Depending on the manufacturer and the purpose, these liquids can range from giving very light coverage to moderate coverage. Crème and stick foundations give moderate-heavy coverage, ranging to the consistency of spackle. Crème-to-powder varieties begin as a crème foundation and dry to a powder finish.

A woman should think carefully about what she wants her foundation makeup to do before she buys it. Foundation makeup can and will hide small wrinkles, for instance, but cannot work miracles. Also, foundation makeup that is applied too heavily will sink into the skin’s crevices, further defining the wrinkles.

Formulas are available that claim to promote anti-aging and younger-looking skin. A woman will simply have to test these and see if she notices an improvement in her skin. Women should choose a foundation makeup with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, if she is not allergic to it. The sunscreen will help protect her skin from aging as much as any other formula. Light to medium coverage is usually the best route for most women.

Women should also be conscious of their skin type and what foundation makeup is best suited for it. Women with normal skin can wear almost any formulation. However, women with oily skin should look for a water-based foundation with no mineral oil, or mineral oil as one of the last ingredients. Women and teens with acne trouble can try a “clarifying” foundation meant for breakout-prone skin, but this formula can make bad matters worse if it dries out the skin too much. Women with dry skin should look for a hydrating or moisturizing foundation.

Sensitive skin requires special treatment. A woman should try brands that say they are hypo-allergenic or especially for sensitive skin. If the brand offers a sample pack, she should buy this first and test the makeup on an inconspicuous patch of skin to see if she has a reaction. She may not be able to use drugstore makeup, but may have to go with a hypo-allergenic department store brand. Samples of these are always available at the makeup counter, where she can try them before buying.

So — department store versus drugstore — which is better? It all depends on what a woman is looking for. If, as mentioned above, she has sensitive skin, the department store may be her only option. However, she may also not be sure how to choose a good foundation color, or may not really understand how to buy for her skin type.

This is when those associates at the makeup counters seem like angels from heaven. They usually do their best to make sure a woman has a good foundation that looks nice and is best for her skin. All this assistance and quality costs extra, however. However, the woman can buy one bottle of foundation from the department store and let it guide her decision if she wants to go to the drugstore the next time. She can just take her bottle with her and compare the colors with what she sees in the store.

A cosmetic counter associate will probably tell a woman how to apply her foundation, but a few tips never hurt. Fingers are good, but only with light coverage. For heavier coverage, use a makeup sponge.

Also, make sure the makeup is blended in well at the jawline. Otherwise, the woman will look as though she has a mask on. However, when the foundation closely matches the skin tone, this is rarely a problem. “Feather” the foundation at the edges and around the eyes, so the makeup will not creep into any folds.

Since foundation is so important to how a woman’s makeup looks, she should choose her base carefully. Thinking about skin tone, type and coverage needed will help her make the best decision.

* Kinetin’s anti-aging effects were first discovered by scientists who revealed that Kinetin protects leaves from drying and premature aging. Further studies showed it delays the destruction of skin cells that produce elastin and collagen.

Kinetin (N6-furfuryladenine) is a naturally-occurring compound found throughout nature: in plants, in animals, and in fact, in your own body’s DNA. Kinetin is a proven anti-oxidant protecting your skin from environmentally-induced free radicals produced by exposure to the sun, smoking and pollution. Kinetin is not an acid and will not increase your risk of sun damage. Kinetin improves the skin barrier function, increasing its ability to retain much needed moisture.

Kinetin works to restore the natural moisture barrier function of the skin to preserve and soften skin without side effects and provides protection for your skin from free radical damage. And, Kinetin has anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideally suited for even highly sensitive skin.

* Studies Show Matrixyl Dramatically Improves Wrinkles Results of a four month French study presented at the 2002 World Congress of Dermatology, revealed an amino-peptide complex known as Matrixyl? produced dramatic changes in the appearance of aging facial skin.

It was demonstrated that a topical application of non-prescription Matrixyl cream improved wrinkle appearance more quickly than retinol without causing irritation and redness. These benefits were confirmed in a separate study that also showed positive changes in elastin and collagen.

Another 12-week study conducted by Procter & Gamble also showed that non-prescription Matrixyl offers significant benefits for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and skin firmness.
